And Tobias went forth, and the dog followed him; and he lodged the first night by the river Tigris.

And he went out to wash his feet, and, behold, a monstrous fish came out to devour him.

Then Tobias was afraid, and cried with a loud voice, saying, My lord, it hath set upon me!

And the angel said unto him, Take hold of its gill, and draw it to thee. And he did so, and drew it to the land, and it floundered at his feet.

Then the angel said unto him, Open the fish, and take out the heart and the gall and the liver, for they are profitable for a useful medicament.

And he did so. Then he roasted of its flesh, and they took it for the journey, and salted the rest, that it might suffice them until they came to the city Ragis of Media.

Then Tobias asked the angel, and said unto him, I beseech thee, my brother Azarias, tell me what cure may be obtained from these things which thou didst bid me to save from the fish.

And the angel answered him, saying, If thou cast a piece of its heart upon the coals, its smoke driveth away all kinds of devils from a man or woman, so that they shall no more come near them.

And the gall serveth to anoint the eyes that have a film upon them, that they may be healed.

And Tobias said, Where wilt thou that we lodge?

And the angel said, There is a man here whose name is Raguel, of thy kindred, and he hath a daughter named Sara, and he hath neither son nor daughter besides her.

And all his wealth is due to thee, and thou must needs take her to wife.

Therefore, ask her of her father, and he will give her to thee in marriage.

Then Tobias answered and said, I have heard that she hath been married to seven husbands, and they died; and I have heard also that the devil slew them.

For this cause I fear lest the like happen unto me, for I am an only son unto my parents, and I should bring their old age with sorrow unto the grave.

Then the angel Raphael said unto him, Listen, and I will tell thee who they are over whom the devil hath power.

For those who marry, and shut out God from their hearts, and give themselves to their lust, as the horse and the mule, which have no understanding; over such hath the devil power.

But when thou art married unto her, and art come into the chamber, abstain from her for three days, and give thyself with her to prayers only.

And on that night, if thou burnest the liver of the fish, the devil shall flee away.

And on the second night thou shalt be admitted into the fellowship of the holy fathers.

And on the third night thou shalt obtain a blessing, that sound children may be born unto you.

And when the third night is past, thou shalt take the virgin with the fear of the Lord, desiring children more than lust, that thou mayest receive the blessing of Abraham's seed.
