1

Then Tobias answered his father Tobit, and said, "Father, all things whatsoever thou hast commanded me, I will do." And Tobit said unto him, "Canst thou reach my son to Gabael in Rages, a city of Media, and I will pay thee thy hire until thou returnest?"

2

But as for this money, I know not how to receive it; for the man knoweth me not, neither know I him; what sign shall I give him? Also the way which leadeth thither, I know it not.

3

Then his father answered him, saying, "I have his hand-writing, and if I show it unto him, he will pay it straightway."

4

And now, go, seek thee a trusty man who shall go with thee for his hire, until thou receivest the money while I yet live.

5

So when Tobias went forth, behold, a fair young man stood girded, as one prepared for a journey.

6

And he saluted him, not knowing that he was an angel of God, and said, "Whence comest thou, good youth?"

7

He said, "I am of the children of Israel." And Tobias said unto him, "Dost thou know the way that leadeth to the country of the Medes?"

8

He said, "I know it, and have traveled all its ways many times, and I dwelt with our brother Gabael, who dwelleth at Rages, a city of Media, which is in the mountain Ecbatana."

9

Then Tobias said unto him, "Tarry for me, until I tell my father of this."

10

So Tobias went in and told his father all these things, and his father wondered, and desired that he might come in unto him.

11

So he came in and saluted him, and said, "Let there be perpetual joy to thee."

12

And Tobit answered, "What joy shall I have, who dwell in darkness and see not the light of heaven?"

13

Then the young man said unto him, "Be of good cheer, for thou shalt shortly obtain healing from God."

15

Then the angel said unto him, "I will take him and bring him back to thee."

16

Then Tobit said unto him, "Tell me, of what family and of what tribe art thou?"

17

Then Raphael the angel said unto him, "Is thy concern in the family of the hireling, or in the hireling who goeth with thy son?"

18

But lest I disquiet thy mind, I am Azarias, the son of the great Ananias.

19

Then Tobit said unto him, "Thou art of a worthy lineage; yet I hope that it will not displease thee that I desired to know thy kinfolk."

20

Then the angel said unto him, "Behold, I will take thy son safe, and I will bring him back to thee safe."

21

Tobit said, "Go ye in peace, and may God be in your way, and His angel accompany you."

22

Then they took all things they desired to take for the journey, and Tobias bade his father and mother farewell, and they both went forth together.

23

When they were departed, his mother began to weep and say, "Thou hast taken the staff of our old age and removed it from us."

24

Would that this money for which thou didst send him had never existed!

25

For what little provision we had was enough, if we but gazed upon our child, that was a great enrichment unto us.

26

But Tobit said unto her, "Weep not, for our son shall arrive safe and return safe, and thine eyes shall behold him."

27

For I am confident that the good angel of God doth accompany him and order him in all his affairs until he return unto us with joy.

28

At these words, his mother ceased from weeping and was silent.
