Then Tobiah called his son and said unto him, “My son, what shall we give to this holy man who went with thee?”

And Tobiah answered and said to his father, “O my father, what recompense shall we give him, and what shall be accounted as equal to his goodness?

He took me and returned me safely, and the money he procured from Gabael for me, and by him I obtained my wife, and he delivered her from the demon and gladdened her parents. And he delivered me from the ravaging of the fish, and he made thee also to behold the light of heaven, and by him have we been filled with all good things. What therefore can we give him that might be equal to these? But I ask thee, O my father, that we ask him if he would be pleased to take half of all that we have brought.” So the father and his son called him, and took him aside, and began to entreat him to condescend and accept half of all that they had brought. Then he spoke secretly to them, and said, “Bless the God of heaven and acknowledge Him before all the living for the mercies which He hath bestowed upon you. For the secret of a king it is good to keep, but the works of God to show forth and to acknowledge them is honorable. Prayer with fasting and almsgiving is better than to hoard treasures of gold, because alms delivereth from death, and purgeth away sins, and maketh a man worthy to obtain mercy and eternal life. But as for those who practice transgression and iniquity, they are enemies to their own souls. But I will declare the truth unto you, and I will not conceal from you any hidden matter. That when thou didst pray with tears and bury the dead, and didst leave thy meal and didst hide thy food in thy house by day, and didst bury them by night, I was raising thy prayers to the Lord, and I was accepted before God. It was necessary that thou shouldst be tested by trial. And now, the Lord hath sent me to heal thee and to deliver Sarah, thy daughter-in-law, from the demon. For I am Ra’phael, the angel, one of the seven who stand before the Lord.” When they heard these sayings, they were terrified and fell upon their faces to the earth, trembling. And the angel said to them, “Peace be unto you, fear not. For when I was with you, it was by the will of God; therefore, bless Him and praise Him. And it seemed unto you that I did eat and drink with you, but I do take invisible food and a drink that no man seeth. And now it is time for me to return to Him who sent me, and do ye bless God and declare all His wonderful works.” And after he had said this, he ascended from their sight, and they saw him no more thereafter. Then they remained for three hours prostrate upon their faces, blessing God; then they arose and declared all His wonderful works.
