1

Now when all the army heard that Holofernes was beheaded, their minds and counsels were disturbed, and they no longer regarded anything save fear and terror; so they resorted to flight.

2

And no man spake to his neighbour, but every one bowed down his head, and abandoned all things, and they hurried to escape from the Hebrews, whom they heard coming against them with their weapons, and they fled by the desert routes and the mountain passes.

3

And when the children of Israel saw them fleeing, they followed hard upon their heels, and descended, shouting with trumpets and pursuing them.

4

And the Assyrians were scattered, rushing in their flight, and the children of Israel were as one body in their pursuit, destroying all whom they overtook.

5

And Uzziah sent messengers to all the cities and regions of Israel.

6

So every town and city sent forth chosen young men, armed with weapons, who pursued them with the edge of the sword until they reached their uttermost border.

7

And the rest of the inhabitants of Bethulia entered the camp of Assur, and took all that the Assyrians had left when they fled, and it was a great quantity.

8

And they that returned to Bethulia, being victorious, brought all their goods, so that the cattle and beasts and all their furniture were without number; and they all, from the least to the greatest, were enriched by their spoil.

9

And Joakim the high priest came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his elders to see Judith.

10

And when she came out to them, they all blessed her with one voice, saying, Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, and the joy of Israel, and the honour of our people.

11

For thou hast acted with strength and established thy heart, and hast loved chastity, and hast known no man after thy husband; therefore, the hand of the Lord hath strengthened thee, and thou shalt be blessed for ever.

12

And all the people said, Amen, amen.

13

And the people of Israel could scarcely gather the spoil of the Assyrians in thirty days.

14

And all that was known to be the personal property of Holofernes they delivered to Judith, of gold and silver and raiment and jewels and furniture; all these things the people gave unto her.

15

And all the people rejoiced with the women and virgins and young men, with harps and psalteries.
