Then stood up Elias the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp.

He brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number.

By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also he brought down fire from heaven thrice.

O Elias, how great and wonderful wast thou in thy wondrous deeds! And who may glory like unto thee!

Who didst raise up a dead man from death, and from the nethermost parts of the earth, by the word of the Most High;

Who didst bring kings to destruction, and honorable men from their bed;

Who heardest in Sinai the judgment, and in Horeb the judgments of vengeance;

Who anointedst kings to take vengeance, and prophets to succeed after him;

Who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire, and in a chariot of fiery horses;

Who wast ordained for reproofs in their times, to pacify wrath, before it break out into fury, and to turn the heart of the father unto the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.

Blessed are they that saw thee, and were adorned with thy friendship.

For we live only in this life; but after death, our name shall not be such.

Elias appeared in a whirlwind; and Eliseus was filled with his spirit: whilst he lived, he was not moved with the presence of any prince, neither could any bring him into subjection.

No word could overcome him; and after his death, his body prophesied.

He did wonders in his life, and at his death were his works marvelous.

For all this the people repented not, neither departed they from their sins, till they were cast out of their land, and scattered through all the earth.

And there was a small remnant of the people left, and a ruler of the house of David.

Some of them did that which was pleasing, and some multiplied sins.

Ezechias fortified his city, and brought water into the midst thereof: he digged the rock with iron, and built up wells for water.

In his time Sennacherib came up, and sent Rabshakeh, and lifted up his hand against Sion, and boasted with great pride.

Then were their hearts troubled and their hands trembled, and they were in pain, as women in travail.

But they called upon the Lord Almighty, and stretched forth their hands towards him: and the Holy One heard them speedily.

And redeemed them by the hand of Isaias.

He smote the host of the Assyrians, and his angel destroyed them.

For Ezechias did that which was pleasing in the sight of the Lord, and strengthened himself in the ways of David his father, as Isaias the prophet commanded him, who was great and faithful in his vision.

In his days the sun went backward, and he lengthened the king's life.

With a great spirit he saw the last things, and comforted them that mourned in Sion.

He showed what should come to pass for ever, and secret things before they came.
