Tobit, of the tribe and city of Naphtali, which is in the upper Galilee, above Nahshon, beyond the road that goeth westward, and to its left is the city of Sephet. They did all eat of the meat of the Gentiles, but he Himself preserved and was not defiled by their food. And because he remembered the Lord with all his heart, God gave him favour with King Shalmaneser, so that he was permitted to go wherever he would and to do what he desired.

He was carried away captive in the days of Shalmaneser, king of Assyria; yet, though in captivity, he departed not from the way of truth.

So that whatsoever he could obtain, he divided it every day among his brethren, who were carried away captive with him, of his kindred.

And though he was the youngest of all in the tribe of Naphtali, he was not involved in any deed of youth.

And when they all went to the golden calves, which Jeroboam, the king of Israel, had made, he alone refrained from the rest.

But he went to Jerusalem, to the temple of the Lord, and there he worshipped the Lord, the God of Israel, and offered all his firstfruits and his tithes.

And when the third year came, he gave all his tithes to the proselytes and strangers.

And upon this and the like, he persevered from his youth according to the law of God.

And when he became a man, he took to himself a wife, whose name was Anna; and she bore him a son, and he called his name after his own.

And he brought him up from his youth in the fear of God and to eschew all sin.

And when he was carried away captive with his wife and son to the city of Nineveh, where all his kindred were.

So he went about among all who were in captivity and guided them with the counsels of salvation.

Then he came to Rages, a city of Media, with what he had, wherewith the king honoured him with ten talents of silver.

And he saw among the great multitude of his kindred a man of his tribe, whose name was Gabael, in need, and he gave him the aforesaid weight of silver with a bond.

And it came to pass after many days, that King Shalmaneser died, and Sennacherib, his son, reigned in his stead. And the children of Israel were in disfavor with him.

And Tobit went about daily among all his kindred, comforting them and helping every one out of his substance according to his ability.

So he fed the hungry, and clothed the naked, and buried the dead and the slain with exceeding zeal.

And when King Sennacherib returned from the land of Judah, fleeing from the plague which God had brought upon him for his blasphemy.

And he began in his wrath to slay many of the children of Israel, Tobit buried their bodies. And this came to the king's knowledge, so he commanded him to be put to death and all his goods to be seized.

So Tobit fled with his son and his wife naked and hid himself, for many loved him.

And it came to pass after forty-five days, that the king was slain by his own sons.

Then Tobit returned to his house, and all his goods were restored to him.
