1

When thou doest good, know to whom thou doest it; and thy good deed shall be acknowledged. If he be humble, walking downcast, be thou wary and beware of him, for thou shalt be like unto one who cleanses a mirror, and thou shalt know that its purity from rust shall not long endure. Do not make him near thee, lest he overthrow thee and take thy place. Do not make him sit at thy right hand, lest he covet thy seat, and finally thou wilt understand my words and be pierced by my sayings. Who shall pity a serpent charmer when he is bitten by a serpent? Or who shall have compassion on those who approach wild beasts? So also he that keepeth company with a sinful man shall be mingled with his sins. He shakes his head and claps his hands, and whispers many things, and changes his countenance.

2

Do good to the righteous, and thou shalt receive a recompense; if not from him, then from the Most High.

3

There is no good for him who persists in evil and gives no alms, for the Most High hateth sinners and hath mercy on the penitent.

4

Give to the righteous, and do not help the sinner, for He will take vengeance upon hypocrites and sinners, but He preserves them for the day of vengeance.

5

Give to the good, and help not the sinner.

6

Do good to the humble, and give not to the hypocrite. Keep back thy bread, and give it not to him, lest he be strengthened thereby against thee.

7

For thou shalt find from evil manifold all the good thou didst unto him, for the Most High hateth sinners and recompenses hypocrites with vengeance.

8

A friend is not known in prosperity, nor is an enemy hidden in adversity.

9

In a man's prosperity his enemies are sorrowful, and in his adversity even his friend departeth.

10

Never trust thine enemy, for his malice is like the rust of brass.

14

He abideth with thee for a season, and if thou stumble, he will not remain.

15

An enemy shows sweetness with his lips, but in his heart he plots to cast thee into a pit.

16

An enemy sheds tears, and if he finds an opportunity, he will be filled with blood.

17

If evil befall thee, thou shalt find him there already present.

18

And whilst he pretends to be thine helper, he trips up thy foot.
