Then he commanded them to lead her into his treasury, and commanded that she should remain there, and he directed what should be given to her from his table. Then Bagoas entered unto Judith and said, Be not ashamed, O good maiden, to come unto my lord, and to be honoured in his presence, and to eat with him, and to drink wine with joy. And Judith answered him, Who am I, that I should gainsay my lord?

And Judith answered and said, I am unable to eat that which I was commanded to be given me, lest there be sin upon me; but I will eat of that which I have brought.

Then Holofernes said unto her, If this which thou hast brought be spent, what shall we do for thee?

And Judith said, As thy soul liveth, my lord, thy handmaid shall not spend all of these, until the Lord shall work by my hand what is in my heart. So his servant led her into the tent which he had commanded.

And when she was within, she requested that it might be permitted her to go out in the night before the morning, to pray and make supplication unto the Lord.

So he commanded the keepers of his bedchamber that they should allow her, as she desired, to go out and come in, to worship her God for three days.

And she went out by night into the valley of Bethulia, and washed herself in the spring of water.

And after she was come up, she made supplication to the God of Israel, that He would direct her way to save her people.

Then she came in and remained in her tent pure, until she took her food in the evening.

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that Holofernes made a supper for his servants, and said to Bagoas the eunuch, Go now, and persuade this Hebrew woman to be content to dwell with me willingly.

For it is a reproach among the Assyrians, if a woman should mock a man and depart from him pure.

Whatsoever is good and pleasing in his sight, that will I do; and whatsoever he is pleased with, that is very good all the days of my life.

Then she arose, and adorned herself with her garments, and came in and stood before him.

And the heart of Holofernes was moved, because his desire for her was greatly kindled.

And Holofernes said unto her, Drink now, and recline with joy, for thou hast found favour in my sight.

And Judith said, I will drink, my lord, because my soul is magnified this day more than all the days of my life.

Then she took and did eat and drink before him of what his handmaid had prepared for her.

And Holofernes was delighted with her presence, and drank of the wine very much, more than he had drunk in all his life.
